This little beauty was very very active all day and trying to lock on with the camera was almost impossible, except for one split second when he posed for this photo ,a single chance like this it makes it all worth while .

A large number of Lesser Redpoll's were on show today in the Freda's Grave area of the Chase , with around 50+ birds mixed in with a very large Siskin flock . They were very flighty but with a little patience they could be photographed drinking out of the small puddles in the car park , just a shame the puddles were not in sunshine .

Staffs Eider

I had intended to spend my day off work at my local patch Knypersley trying to catch up with the Bramblings and Goosanders that have started to arrive but a text on my phone around 12-30 put payed to all that . The text said Eider drake at Rudyard Lake just ten minutes from where I was . A couple of quick phone calls to Nick Smith and Paul Shenton to see what they knew and I was on my way . The bird was close in shore by the sailing club on my arrival diving for clams , it saw me and quickly moved out into the middle . With a little bit of fieldcraft I was able to capture these images , the bird was very wary and fully winged so all looks good . There are two places within 30 miles that do have wildfowl collections so the jury is still out !!!!

Here i go again light not right bird to distant etc etc , but what the heck a good bird none the less. This female / 1st-winter Black Redstart played hide and seek as it spent most of its time on the Island at Gailey Reservoir , although it did make frequent visits to the shore by the sailing club .

I have been following around fourty Bramblings on my local patch for nearly a month now , what with work and bad weather its been a nightmare to trying to get everything to come together . And all I can come up with is this half decent record shot in bad light and with a S..T background.......Not happy.

Ever since this bird turned up at Westport Lake on wednesday I have been itching to get back at it and give it another go in better light . So with a full day off work today (saturday) and the promise of better weather I was all ready for action , a few comments from local Westport Birders to why have i returned when my shots looked ok the other day were met with the reply I am not happy untill I see the glint in its eyes and a droplets of water on the bill................See Nick now iam reasonably HAPPY mate.

I recieved a text from Mr Westport (Nick Smith) this morning letting me know that a immature drake Red-breasted Merganser had just been found by Jeff Jones on the lake and was showing reasonably well . This being the first record on the lake since Oct 12th 2002 , lucky enough i had just enough time to nip down before work , the weather was crap poor light etc but with camera at the ready i recorded a few record shots for the lads. If it stays i will be back !!

Great Grey...... Staffs

This adult Great Grey Shrike is possibly the returning juvenile bird from last year ,so with a day off work and the weather looking good for this afternoon i decided to meet up with my old friend Dave Hutton and give it a crack . On arrival it was soon located and after settling ourselves down we were rewarded with excellent views as it kept dropping from its favoured perch to feed on the odd wasp or two .

I photographed a juvenile at Belvide Res the day before my holiday so it was only fitting to make a diversion on my way home from Norfolk to photograph this adult at Grafham Water Cambridgeshire . After leaving Dave Hutton in Lincolnshire at the American Black Tern the day before , I meet up with him again today and while waiting for the Gull to perform we enjoyed ourselfs with a very confiding juvenile Grey Phalarope .

During my Norfolk holiday a juvenile American Black Tern decided to take up residence at Covenham Reservoir in Lincolnshire so on the last day before going home i decided to venture out of Norfolk and meet up with Dave Hutton to take a look at this stunning little American Tern .
